Vedic astrology in Kanpur when the birth crosses midnight
Just after midnight, the Kanpur birth date on the certificate can already be the next civil day, which vedic astrology has to follow. The clock is Indian Standard Time, Asia/Kolkata, and midnight does not create a seasonal exception. India does not observe daylight saving, so the date line is the ordinary civil date. Families who later move abroad sometimes 'fix' that midnight by retiming it in the new zone.

The date is part of the time
A birth at 12:20 at night belongs to the date already begun, if that is what the certificate shows. Using the previous evening because it still felt like yesterday shifts the chart by a day. Enter Kanpur with the registered date and time. The offset is UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes. No second Indian offset appears at midnight.
Abroad, the midnight story gets worse
A relative in another country may convert 12:20 IST into their local hour and then ask for a chart 'in our time.' If the city field is also changed to the new city, both place and offset are wrong. Keep the birth in Kanpur at the recorded IST instant. A chart for life events now can watch transits from where you live. That is not the birth chart.
Houses once the instant is fixed
Sidereal positions under Lahiri, from the Swiss Ephemeris, depend on that instant. The 10th house and its lord speak to career. The 7th, its lord, and D9 speak to marriage. The Vimshottari dasha already running speaks to timing. Free accounts get a Kundli and chat. Paid plans add PDF reports, further divisional charts, and WhatsApp transit alerts.

Frequently asked questions
Does vedic astrology use a special midnight zone for Kanpur?
No. Kanpur uses Asia/Kolkata all night, with no daylight saving. The date and time on the certificate are the inputs, including when the birth is just after midnight.
The family says it was 'the night of the 4th' but the paper says the 5th. Which wins?
The registered date and time win. A spoken 'night of' often means the previous evening. If the paper is itself blank, you do not yet have a birth instant.
Can we convert a Kanpur midnight birth into the time zone we live in now?
Not as a new birthplace. Conversion for curiosity is fine if you still name Kanpur and start from Indian Standard Time. Replacing the city applies a different offset.
