Vedic astrology for a Delhi birth

A dusk city and a brass lamp, for a Delhi birth chart

Vedic astrology for a Delhi birth is calculated on Indian Standard Time, the same offset as the rest of the country. Asia/Kolkata does not change in summer. Delhi lies west of the meridian near Mirzapur, so the Sun reaches the local meridian after 12:00 on the clock. Geocoding uses the place you type. Calling every hospital New Delhi when the record says a different name moves the coordinates without moving the zone.

New Delhi is not a different zone

New Delhi, Delhi, and the towns of the National Capital Region share Asia/Kolkata. They do not share one pin on the map. Gurgaon and Noida are often written as Delhi on forms filled in later. If the birth was in Gurgaon, the chart should say Gurgaon. The offset would still be Indian Standard Time, with no daylight saving, but the lagna is sensitive to place as well as hour.

Families who moved to the United States sometimes reconstruct the time from memory in Eastern Time and then convert. Do that only if you are converting a remembered clock, not if you already have a hospital slip in Indian Standard Time. Converting a time that was already standard produces a chart for a different hour.

Write down whether the slip used a 12-hour clock. Noon and midnight are the two times most often swapped.

No summer hour to add

Delhi does not observe daylight saving. An hour added in April or October is an import from a country that does. The lagna can change across that hour when the ascendant is near the edge of a sign. The fix is to remove the invented hour, not to look for a Delhi exception in the ephemeris.

Solar noon after 12:00 is expected west of Mirzapur. It is not evidence that the nurse's clock was slow. Leave the written time as it stands and let the Swiss Ephemeris place the Sun on the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri.

If two relatives disagree by twenty minutes, cast both and see whether the lagna sign holds. If it holds, the houses you care about are stable. If it flips, the birth time is the thing to settle before you read marriage or career.

Marriage and work use the same houses as anywhere else

The 7th house, its lord, and D9 Navamsa are the marriage reading. The 10th house and its lord are the career reading. Timing is the Vimshottari dasha already in progress, counted from the Moon's nakshatra. Delhi does not add a special house or a special year.

A weekly sun-sign column for the week of the birth is a different product. It does not know the lagna. Do not mix its sentences into the sidereal chart and then wonder why the signs disagree.

This page will not name a degree, a dasha year, or a spouse. Those require the time you enter.

Order of the first pass

Read the lagna, then the Moon, then the house that matches the question. For a wedding question, move to D9 after the birth chart, not instead of it. For work, stay with the 10th lord long enough to see which house it occupies, not only whether it is exalted.

Saturn and Jupiter in the sky today are transits. They describe pressure and opportunity on the chart you already have. They are not a new birth chart for the year you asked.

Someone born in Delhi who now lives in London still has a Delhi birth. Europe/London and its summer time belong to days lived in London. They do not belong to the hour on the Delhi certificate.

The free Kundli and what it refuses to guess

A free account draws the Kundli and opens the astrologer chat. Paid plans add a PDF, more divisional charts, and WhatsApp transit alerts. None of those plans invent a birth time.

Enter Delhi or New Delhi exactly as the record has it. The geocoder applies Asia/Kolkata. You should not also subtract 5 hours 30 minutes yourself. That subtraction is the software's job, and doing it twice lands the planets in the wrong place.

If an older printed chart from a Delhi astrologer used a different ayanamsa, the signs can shift by a degree or more at the boundary. Lahiri is the ayanamsa this site uses. Compare charts only after you know both used Lahiri.

Frequently asked questions

Is Delhi on a different offset from Mumbai?

No. Both use Asia/Kolkata, UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes, with no daylight saving. Both sit west of Mirzapur, so solar noon is after 12:00 in both cities.

The form says New Delhi and the family says Gurgaon. Which do I enter?

Enter the place where the birth happened. The zone stays Indian Standard Time either way. The coordinates should match the hospital, not the city people use in conversation.

Do I add an hour for summer births in Delhi?

No. Delhi does not observe daylight saving. Adding an hour rewrites the lagna.
