Vedic astrology in Allahabad, the city now called Prayagraj
Allahabad is the name on older certificates and Prayagraj the name used now, and vedic astrology is still calculating that same city in Indian Standard Time. The rename did not create a zone. Asia/Kolkata applies all year, with no daylight saving, at UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes. Keep the birth hour exactly as registered. Changing the letters of the city is not a reason to change the minute.

Two names, one birth instant
If you test Allahabad and Prayagraj, hold the date and time still. A lagna that moves has a typed difference in the clock, or a geocoder that missed one of the strings. Prefer the name on the certificate you are holding, and do not average two results. The offset applied before the Julian day is the Indian one in either spelling.
Do not invent a midpoint clock
People who know that Indian Standard Time is defined near Mirzapur sometimes treat Allahabad, which they think of as central, as a special case that needs no zone at all, or as solar time by default. The legal clock is still Asia/Kolkata. Enter civil time. The software geocodes the place. Do not replace that clock with solar time by hand.
A move does not finish the rename
Later life abroad adds a third name: the new city. That city may observe daylight saving. It is not 'Prayagraj updated.' Marriage is read from the 7th house, its lord, and D9 of the birth chart. The running Vimshottari dasha uses the Allahabad or Prayagraj instant, not the year the passport changed.

Frequently asked questions
Does vedic astrology treat Prayagraj as a new time zone?
No. Prayagraj and Allahabad are one city on Asia/Kolkata, with no daylight saving. The hour on the old certificate stays the hour.
Should the time be entered as solar time because the city is central?
No. Enter Indian Standard Time. The chart geocodes the city and applies Asia/Kolkata. A solar correction done by hand is not part of the method.
Which spelling should a free Kundli use?
The spelling on the birth record. A free account can generate the Kundli and chat. What matters is that the time matches that record.
