A natal chart and a Kundli start from the same birth

A sidereal sky wheel and a brass lamp, for a natal chart compared with a Kundli

A natal chart and a Kundli are two names for a map of the sky at a birth. Both need the date, the clock time, and the place. Jyothish SI draws that map on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa and positions from the Swiss Ephemeris. A newspaper Sun sign, and many apps that call the result a natal chart, use the tropical zodiac instead. The birth data can match and the signs can still disagree.

What you type, and what the software refuses to guess

The chart is not a personality quiz. It is a calculation. The date fixes the day. The clock time fixes the ascendant, which moves through a whole sign in about two hours, so a missing hour is not a small error. The place fixes the coordinates and the zone offset, including daylight saving where that zone uses it.

If the certificate already states the time in the local standard of that city, do not convert it again. Doing the offset twice puts the planets on the wrong hour. If the family only remembers a window, say so and test the edges of that window. Do not invent a minute.

A free account can generate the Kundli and chat about the stored chart. Paid plans add a PDF, further divisional charts, and WhatsApp transit alerts. None of those plans supply a birth time you do not have.

Why the signs disagree with a tropical app

Western natal charts in the style of Co-Star and most English-language Sun-sign columns measure signs from the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic Jyotish on this site measures signs from the sidereal zodiac, using Lahiri. The gap between those two starting points is the ayanamsa. It is large enough that a planet near the end of a tropical sign often sits in the previous sidereal sign.

That is not a bug in either program if each program is doing what it claims. It is two conventions. Comparing a tropical Sun sign with a sidereal Moon sign, as if they were the same kind of fact, mixes the conventions.

This site will not print a tropical chart beside the Kundli and pretend they are one figure. If you want the sidereal reading, use the Kundli. If a friend quotes a tropical placement, ask which zodiac their app used before you argue about the sign.

What the Kundli actually contains

The birth chart here is the D1, drawn in the North Indian style, with planets in signs and houses. The ascendant is the lagna. The Moon's sign is the rashi people often mean when they say moon sign. The Moon's nakshatra starts the Vimshottari dasha count.

D9 Navamsa is included because marriage questions are not read from the birth chart alone. The 7th house, its lord, and the navamsa are the marriage set. Career questions use the 10th house and its lord. Timing uses the dasha that is already running, then the transits of Saturn and Jupiter over that picture.

A page like this cannot name your lagna, your nakshatra, or a dasha year. Those come from the time you enter.

Birth chart, natal chart, and horoscope column

People search birth chart, natal chart, and Kundli for the same job: a figure from their own birth, not a column for everyone born in a month. A horoscope column that only knows the Sun sign is a different product. It can be entertaining. It does not know the lagna or the dasha.

Apps that rank for birth chart and natal chart in app stores, including Co-Star, are usually selling that western, tropical reading and a daily note. AstroSage and similar Kundli apps are selling the sidereal chart and matching. Jyothish SI is in the second family. The chat is given the computed chart. It is not a substitute for the calculation, and it is not a promise about a particular year of your life.

If the search that brought you here was natal chart, you can still use the tool. Enter the birth data. Read the result as sidereal.

A short order for the first look

Read the lagna first. If the time is soft, see whether a small change of minutes flips the sign. Then read the Moon and its nakshatra, because the dasha sequence hangs on that. Then open the house that matches the question: 7th for marriage, 10th for work, 2nd and 11th for money, lagna and 6th for the body.

Only after that is a transit worth reading. Saturn on a house describes pressure now. It does not replace the chart you were born with.

Keep one chart as the reference. Mixing a tropical screenshot, an old printed Kundli that used another ayanamsa, and this Lahiri figure will look like three different lives. Name the ayanamsa before you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is a natal chart the same as a Kundli?

Both are maps of a birth. On this site the Kundli is sidereal, with Lahiri and the Swiss Ephemeris. Many pages that say natal chart mean a tropical figure. The birth data can be identical and the signs can still differ.

Can I get a natal chart with no birth time?

You can place the planets for the day, but you cannot trust the lagna or the houses. The ascendant changes sign in about two hours. Without a time, say that the time is unknown instead of inventing noon.

Does the free chart include D9 and dasha?

A free account includes Kundli generation and AI astrologer chat on the stored chart. D9 and the Vimshottari sequence are part of that Vedic figure. A PDF and extra vargas sit on paid plans.

Why does my Sun sign differ from Co-Star?

Co-Star style apps use the tropical zodiac. This site uses the sidereal zodiac and Lahiri. Ask which zodiac the other app used before treating the signs as a contradiction in the sky.
